POE & Diablo Franchise: Season and Ladder Starter Checklist

Are you thinking of creating a new character in Sanctuary, ready to defeat Diablo and his hellish minions? How about having the knack for adventure in Wraeclast, which is full of new and exciting adventures every season? If so, you want to be prepared, because starting a new league or ladder season requires some planning. Failure to do that one simple task could lead to disastrous consequences, and you wouldn’t want that, would you?

So today, I am going to go over some of the things that you need to do before you create a character for the new ladder season or league. Whether you’re playing Diablo II: Resurrected, Diablo IV, or Path of Exile 2, I am here to help you have a fun and exciting time enjoying these games!

Of course, if you want to take on these awesome ARPGs, you need to have all of the necessary game files installed on your favorite platform. Whether you are playing on consoles or the PC, you can get the base game and expansion for all these titles in one click by heading to Gamerall!

Path of Exile 2: Journey to Wraeclast

Among the three titles mentioned earlier, Path of Exile 2 (aka PoE 2) is the most comprehensive and feature-rich, with somewhat complicated mechanics throughout your progression from the campaign to the endgame.

If you are going to start a journey to Wraeclast, here are the things that you need to think about to prepare you for what’s to come:

Choose the Right League

Grinding Gear Games always features a new “league” every four months. Recently, the company launched Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict, which is the game’s first-ever League.

Every league is exciting because it requires you to start fresh, so you have to create a new character every several months or so. What is the incentive of playing in a new league that only lasts for four months, you ask?

Well, unlike the “Standard Mode,” where content is steady, every PoE 2 league always delivers new features that you’ll definitely want to explore. For instance, the newly released Rise of the Abyssals League for Path of Exile 2 will have you fight fearsome monsters from the Abyssal Depths. Eliminating them rewards you with awesome loot, possibly granting new crafting materials in the form of Perfect Chaos Orbs, Perfect Exalted Orbs, and special bones that imbue unique modifiers on your items that you cannot find anywhere else.

So, if you want to enjoy everything that Path of Exile 2 has to offer, definitely go for the new league (not the Standard Mode).

Choosing a New League (During Character Creation)

Select the Right Mode

After choosing the correct league, you must also select the right mode to play in. There are a few modes that you need to know about, such as:

  • Regular: Also known as “Softcore,” this mode is recommended if it is your first time playing the game. Here, you can respawn as many times as you like, which makes it forgiving for beginners. It is possible to trade with other players in Softcore as well.
  • Hardcore: This mode is meant for those seasoned veterans who want to up the ante in terms of a challenging experience. When you die in Hardcore, your character is permanently dead, so you’ll have to create a new one if that happens.
  • Solo Self-Found: If you like the true ARPG experience where you don’t want to rely on other people to get items via trade, then Solo Self-Found (aka “SSF”) is the right one to choose.

Pick the Right League Starter

For those who do not know, a “league starter” is basically a build in Path of Exile 2 that can excel in the campaign even with budget or self-found gear. It is strong enough to handle content in the four-act campaign and should be powerful enough to get you started in the endgame.

Having said that, here are a few awesome league starters I can recommend:

  • Lightning Arrow Deadeye: A powerful ranged class with the ability to pick enemies apart from afar, the Lightning Arrow Deadeye uses lightning-infused arrows to deal with the fearsome Abyssal Monsters.
  • Arc Stormweaver: Yes, lightning-based builds are powerful in this league, and the Arc Stormweaver perfectly exemplifies that. With the choice of two powerful lightning abilities—Spark and Arc—this build can electrify foes with ease.
  • Chaos DoT Lich: If you are into builds that have a rather casual playstyle, then the Chaos DoT Lich is the right one for you! This build utilizes Essence Drain and Contagion, which are spells that deal chaos damage over time. With this build, you can just cast these spells in alternating fashion as you move around the map.

Follow a Build Guide

Path of Exile 2 is a complicated game, and if you are a complete beginner, you’ll definitely get lost at some point. I highly recommend that you follow a build guide because such articles point you in the right direction, such as what passive skills to take, what gear to equip, and what skills to use, among other things.

Understand Crafting Mechanics

Crafting is a huge part of PoE 2. If you’re the type of person who wants only the best gear, you’d have to try crafting in Path of Exile 2, even though it is a bit complicated for newbies.

Having said that, there are a bunch of crafting items that you need to be aware of. Here are just some of the most important ones for basic crafting:

  • Orb of Transmutation: Upgrades a normal item into a magic item, granting it one random modifier.
  • Orb of Augmentation: Adds a new random modifier to a magic item.
  • Regal Orb: Upgrades a magic item into a rare item, granting one new random modifier in the process.
  • Exalted Orb: Adds a new random modifier on a rare item.
  • Divine Orb: Randomizes the numeric values of an item’s modifiers (but only within a range).

Early on in your league journey, the Orb of Transmutation, Orb of Augmentation, and Regal Orb will be your friends. Use these three (in the order they are presented) to get yourself some rare items to make leveling a whole lot easier.

Once you have enough Exalted Orbs, you can utilize them to gain more modifiers (up to a maximum of six). For the endgame, you’ll need PoE 2 Divine Orbs to get the best possible numeric values on your item.

You see, each item that you can equip in the game has a set of “modifiers” that contain numeric values that increase or decrease when spamming it with Divine Orbs. Your piece of gear should already be good enough on its own to warrant a Divine Orb use since this type of PoE 2 Currency is quite rare.

Diablo 4: Venture Into Sanctuary

Blizzard has developed something special in Diablo 4. It certainly has crisper graphics, better mechanics, and a more fluid gaming experience compared to its predecessors, making it a solid ARPG to hop into, especially if you are new to the genre.

If you want to venture into the world of Sanctuary, be sure to grab our discounted game bundle at Gamerall. This includes the base game and the Vessel of Hatred expansion. Get these awesome things in just one click!

Beat the Campaign

Yes, that’s right! This is the most logical choice, whether you are planning to start a new season or not. Beating the campaign at least once gives you the option to skip it when starting a new season. This saves you a lot of time and lets you enjoy what the new season has to offer right away!

Take note that you will still go back to level 1 even if you choose to skip the campaign in the new seasonal journey. However, there are things that will carry over, including:

  • Mount (which you can ride immediately)
  • Full Map (if you have explored Sanctuary in the previous campaign run)
  • Bonuses from the Altars of Lilith (stat bonuses and “Renown”)
  • Renown progress for each region
  • All waypoints unlocked

Choose the ‘Seasonal’ Mode

Similar to Path of Exile 2, you also have to select the right game mode when creating a new character in Diablo 4. If you want to avail of the lore and mechanics that a new season brings, then it’s a no-brainer to choose the Seasonal Mode during character creation, as shown in the image below:

Select the Right Class

At the time of writing this guide, there are six classes in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred. Here’s a brief description of each one:

  • Barbarian: Ideal for those who want a savage brute that excels in physical damage, the Barbarian can bash skulls and decimate the minions of Hell with ease. The Barbarian is ideal if you love melee combat.
  • Rogue: A more agile fighter, capable of lurking in the shadows and getting out of it in time for the perfect kill, the Rogue is better suited for fast-paced melee combat. Select the Rogue if you prefer killing things quickly and efficiently.
  • Sorcerer: The quintessential mage class in D4, the Sorcerer can harness the elements and use them to slay the forces of evil. Although considered a “glass cannon” compared to the likes of the Barbarian or Druid, the Sorcerer’s insane damage potential makes up for that shortcoming.
  • Necromancer: Does summoning a horde of skeletal minions appeal to you? Then, the Necromancer is the right one! The Necromancer can command an army of the undead to do the dirty work, though he can be built to become a more lethal caster through his use of dark magic.
  • Druid: A balanced class that is proficient at melee and ranged combat, the Druid can shapeshift into multiple animal forms, as well as cast devastating earth magic to defeat its foes.
  • Spiritborn: A new class introduced in the Vessel of Hatred expansion, the Spiritborn can call forth several Spirit Guardians, namely the Jaguar, Gorilla, Eagle, and Centipede, each offering something unique to the table. If you like a mobile class that packs a punch and has incredible flexibility in terms of what builds you can use, then the Spiritborn class fits that description.

Engage with the Seasonal Mechanic

Compared to PoE 2, where you have plenty of other things to do to improve your character, things are a bit different in Diablo 4. In this game, you are incentivized to engage with the seasonal mechanic, whatever that may be.

Let’s take Season 9, for example. The main seasonal mechanic is the Horadric Spellcraft System, which allows you to add catalysts, infusions, and arcana to your spells to make them a whole lot better.

But before you experiment with those things, you’d have to complete the seasonal questline in order to unlock this new level of customization.

New seasons will bring fresh features that you’d definitely want to explore. That is why creating a new character every season is a great way to enjoy Diablo 4, whether you’re a casual player who can only play a couple of hours a day or someone who likes to engage with this game for countless hours!

Play More and Often

Diablo 4 has a battle pass system where you unlock rewards just by playing the game. Now there are a few tiers of Diablo 4 battle passes, such as:

  • Free: As the name implies, the Free Battle Pass is active just by playing the new season. You only get 27 out of the possible 90 rewards, though, which is quite limiting, especially if you love pouring hours into D4.
  • Premium: The Premium Battle Pass allows you to get all 90 rewards for a single season. Some items you can get from this battle pass include themed cosmetics, additional Platinum (premium currency), and exclusive titles, among others.
  • Accelerated: If you are a busy person and can only devote a small fraction of your time in a week to play Diablo 4, you might not be able to complete all 90 rewards from the Premium Battle Pass. That is why Blizzard also features the Accelerated Battle Pass, which already unlocks the first 20 rewards for you, so you only have 70 more to go. In some cases, the Accelerated Battle Pass may contain additional items, such as the “Wings of Hell’s Legion” emote in Season 4.

To unlock the rewards from each battle pass, you’ll have to progress through the Seasonal Journey to gain “Favor.” If you are interested in the Premium and Accelerated Battle Passes but couldn’t afford them because their price is too steep, then don’t worry!

Our D4 bundle in Gamerall not only gives you full access to the base game and the expansion, but also includes the Premium Battle Pass—all for a very low price!

Diablo II: Resurrected: Nothing Beats the Classic

The last game we are going to talk about in this guide is none other than Diablo II: Resurrected. Also known as D2R by the community, this game is just a remastered version of the classic ARPG that started an entire genre. Fun fact, the original Path of Exile game developed by GGG was actually inspired by Diablo II, which is why you can see a lot of resemblance—from the items to the health and mana pools of each character in PoE.

Do you want to go down memory lane and create a new character in D2R? If so, here is the ladder starter checklist that you have to be aware of:

Select the Right Game Mode

Compared to its more modern counterpart, Diablo II: Resurrected is actually more competitive because each new season will have you race with other players to level 99. The new season opens up a new “Ladder,” which you can climb to the top just by leveling as quickly as possible.

That said, if you want to participate in the new ladder season, you have to choose the right mode. Here are the various game modes you can select in D2R:

  • Standard Ladder: The “Softcore” ladder season, where death is not permanent. Think of this as similar to the regular “league” in PoE 2.
  • Hardcore Ladder: This is also a competitive ladder mode, albeit death is permanent. Only choose this if you are already familiar with the game or if you want to challenge yourself.
  • Pre-Expansion Ladder: A competitive ladder season that only goes from Act 1 to Act 4. In other words, no content from the “Lord of Destruction” expansion whatsoever. This is great if you want to have the full “vanilla” Diablo 2 experience.
  • Pre-Expansion Hardcore Ladder: Same as above, except for the “Permadeath” status if you die.

There is no battle pass in Diablo II: Resurrected, so you can focus only on beating others to the top. Choose the left-most icon to create a new character for the ladder season.

Go for the Best Ladder Starters

“Ladder Starters” are quite similar to the league starters from PoE 2. Basically, these refer to builds that perform admirably well even with self-found gear.

If you like some recommendations, choose any of these based on your preferred playstyle:

  • Mosaic Assassin: A true killer that is unlocked by equipping two special claws, the Mosaic Assassin destroys every monster in Sanctuary. This build got its name from the “Mosaic” runeword, which allows the Assassin to use a finisher without consuming charges.
  • Hammerdin: If you want to play as the quintessential “Light Class” in D2R, the Hammerdin (short for Blessed Hammer Paladin) is the one for you! This build utilizes a skill called Blessed Hammer, which conjures magical hammers that circle around you. Enemies hit by the hammers will surely get eliminated shortly after.
  • Blizzard Sorc: Blizzard is a very powerful spell in the Sorceress’ kit, so why not use it? This build destroys early-game content, even more so during the late game, where you have access to more powerful runewords such as Infinity or uniques like The Oculus.
  • Summoner Necro: This build unlocks the true power of the Necromancer. It enables you to summon multiple minions, which do not require expensive gear to deal damage. Of course, upgrade options broaden the higher your level is.
  • Trapsin: Short for “Trap Assassin,” this D2R build utilizes the Assassin’s proficiency at setting up deadly traps to kill enemies. This is awesome if you want a safer playstyle; just lay down the traps and let them eliminate monsters for you.

Always Think About Efficiency

Blizzard does not release new content for Diablo II: Resurrected as often as it does for D4. As such, efficiency matters more than anything in this game. This is the reason why you need a competent build to start the new ladder season with, because you want to leave others in the dust while you rise to the top of the charts.

Farm Early, Farm Often

Aside from efficiency, you have to think about farming items as well. Runes are a pretty huge part of the D2R economy because they pave the way for better gear later down the line. You can either use these runes to create powerful runewords or sell them for a profit.

That said, here are some of the good rune farming spots in the early game:

  • The Countess in The Forgotten Tower (Act 1)
  • Andariel in the Catacombs Level 4 (Act 1)
  • Super Chests in the Lower Kurast (Act 3)
  • The Council Members in Travincal (Act 3)

The Different Runes That Can Be Found in Diablo II: Resurrected

Obtain the ‘Enigma’

You may have heard of this term being thrown around in the D2R community. What is it, exactly? Well, Enigma is one of the most popular runewords in Diablo II: Resurrected, which you can insert into body armor with three sockets.

Enigma gives other classes in D2R access to the Teleport skill. If you didn’t know, Teleport was a Sorceress-only skill back then, though thanks to Enigma, it can now be used by the Paladin, Barbarian, Druid, Assassin, Amazon, and Necromancer as well.

Before you get your hopes up, do note that the runewords needed to create Enigma are expensive. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Head to our Gamerall store to buy Enigma for a cheap price!

Season and Ladder Starter Checklist: Final Thoughts

Path of Exile 2, Diablo 4, and Diablo II: Resurrected are all amazing ARPGs. You just have to choose which one of their mechanics you find the most enjoyable.

If you do not mind the complexity of its systems, Path of Exile 2 is the most robust among the three. You have plenty of avenues to create awesome builds by utilizing a different combination of items, skills, and support gems. This may not be suited for ARPG beginners, but if you like the challenge, then PoE 2 is very easy to recommend.

Diablo 4 is perfectly balanced in terms of challenge and content. Blizzard has done an admirable job of creating an action RPG that still holds true to the lore of the franchise, but also adds new systems that make things more interesting, such as the introduction of the Paragon Board, adding new unique items each season, and a whole lot more.

And then, there’s the original (well, at least a better version, graphically speaking). Diablo II: Resurrected is a remastered version of a classic. If you don’t mind new content but still want the challenge to beat other players in the race to the top of the ladder, then this game is definitely for you!

Whatever the case may be, here at Gamerall, we have all of those games in our store. Gain access to their base games, as well as their expansions and season passes, all in one click. So, what are you waiting for? Go to Gamerall today!
