Grand Theft Auto VI (aka GTA 6) is one of the most highly anticipated games that is coming out later this year. After many delays, the community is hoping that GTA 6 will finally be available before 2026 ends. Here is everything we know about Grand Theft Auto VI thus far:

GTA 6: An Extended Look

GTA 6 Extended Look

Rockstar has recently announced that the company is going to release a video for Grand Theft Auto VI on Thursday, August 27, at 3 PM ET on Netflix. Those who don’t have a subscription to the streaming platform need not worry because GTA 6: Extended Look will also be available on Rockstar Games’ official YouTube Channel on the same day, albeit at 9 PM ET.

GTA 6: What We Know So Far

While there are a lot of things to be excited about, we will refresh your memory about the things that have been confirmed so far with regard to GTA 6. We are also going to provide you with some credible leaks, which we believe to have some grain of truth.

Confirmed Characters

GTA 6 characters

Rockstar Games has cooked up a pretty interesting entry to the Grand Theft Auto franchise. GTA 6 is unlike any other because it features a female lead named Lucia Caminos. That’s right! She is not a side character or just something added to thicken the plot; Lucia is a co-lead who plays a pivotal role in the game.

Alongside the female protagonist is Jason Duval, who seems to be Lucia’s love interest. During the course of the trailers that Rockstar has released thus far, the dynamic duo has been seen doing plenty of crimes around Leonida—a fictional state where Vice City can be found.

The game also features other interesting characters. You can check out our GTA 6 confirmed characters article for more info.

Main Location

GTA 6 Leonida location

GTA 6 is set in the fictional Florida-like state called Leonida. Within Leonida is a popular urban setting known as Vice City. However, Jason and Lucia’s story might extend across the wider state.

Based on the trailers, Leonida seems to be a beautiful place, with clear beaches, picturesque landscapes, and interesting wildlife. Of course, there are plenty of people enjoying their time around the state, so it’s going to be a fun experience dealing with them, especially considering that GTA 6 is essentially an open-world adventure.

GTA 6 Leonida open world

Here are the other places that may be available in the full release of GTA 6 (based on what we’ve seen in the trailers):

  • A dense coastal metropolis.
  • A long barrier island that maps to Miami Beach (complete with art-deco storefronts and neon signage at night).
  • An inland commercial strip
  • A stadium
  • Residential neighborhoods

If Rockstar Games were to retain some elements from the original “Vice City” game released in 2002, these locations would be reminiscent of Ocean Drive, Malibu Club, and the Vercetti Estate on Starfish Island.

Points of Interest

The GTA 6 trailers have also revealed some points of interest that are likened to some of the locations that you can find in the real world. For instance, the Wetland Regions closely resemble the Everglades. You can learn more about the POIs in GTA 6 Map article.

GTA 6 Will Not Replace GTA Online

In a recent interview with Bloomberg's Jason Schrier, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick said that Rockstar is focused exclusively on the single-player portion of GTA 6. A new GTA online game is not in the works at this time.

The good news, though, is that Take-Two will continually support GTA Online. Zelnick confirms this by saying that the update cadence for GTA Online has been very stable and that he expects continued support for it moving forward.

GTA 6: The 2022 Leaks

In 2022, about 90 videos were leaked that showcased what appeared to be in-game footage of an unfinished version of Grand Theft Auto VI itself. This was posted by a person named “teapotuberhacker.” However, the real culprits behind this leak were a hacking group called Lapsus$.

According to Lapsus$, the hacking group was able to breach Rockstar’s internal Slack server, then pulled about 90 development videos of GTA 6. Lapsus$ also claimed that the group got hold of the source code for both GTA 5 and GTA 6.

News about the leak spread throughout the internet, and this was subsequently confirmed by Rockstar on September 19, 2022. The company said that the leak was a result of a “network intrusion” and that the people within Rockstar Games were “extremely disappointed” about what had happened. Anyway, the person who was responsible for the GTA leaks in 2022 was Arion Kurtaj.

Kurtaj was 17 years old at that time. Age was not a problem for him, however, because he was able to breach Rockstar’s internal Slack while on police bail (due to his past breaches), using only an Amazon Fire Stick TV plugged into a hotel room, plus a phone and a keyboard.

The 2022 GTA 6 leaks looked like a small crime at first. However, the company had to spend roughly $5 million dollars to recover from the breach (not to mention the countless hours the company’s staff had to spend to deal with this situation).

GTA 6: The Current Leaks

There is a hacker group that claims to have obtained reportedly leaked footage of GTA 6.

On August 18, a hacker group called Cyberleek released a couple of alleged gameplay clips and several screenshots pertaining to GTA 6. And we’re talking about actual gameplay footage here, at least it looks like it.

We cannot post the leaked videos and images in this article because Rockstar might take our post down, but we can describe the things that were shown in the said media in the following sections.

To be clear, Rockstar has not confirmed the authenticity of the leaked materials, so take them with a grain of salt.

Movement and Gameplay

In the first gameplay clip, it appears to show Jason resting on the balcony. He briefly scratches his face before he jumps straight to the ground. By the looks of it, the movement mechanics of the game are quite similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.

Jason was also seen making some hoops. Apparently, players will have the ability to grab a basketball in GTA 6 and shoot some hoops while playing as Jason (and possibly Lucia).

In the same video clip, Jason misses a shot, and the ball rolls near a small body of water, briefly showcasing the incredible water physics that GTA 6 is capable of.

Combat System and Other Mechanics

Whenever Jason is able to shoot the basketball successfully, a notification pops up after some time that tells you that a positive change occurred—Jason’s “Focus” stat has increased by 2%.

What this tells us is that GTA 6 may employ roughly the same character progression system as in Red Dead Redemption 2. This means that using the same character on missions might improve their stats over time, making them stronger and better at what they do.

The “Focus” stat might not just be for menial tasks and hobbies, but a crucial one that helps with aiming and driving. If this is true, perhaps doing all of those side quests is not a waste of time after all!

On to the second leaked video. This footage shows a glimpse of the game’s combat system. Apparently, the NPCs’ response to Jason ramming his car into theirs is realistic, to say the least.

The game’s combat system looks like a combination of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. After ramming his car, Jason tries to escape the scene, but is chased by the NPCs. The people who are after him actually pulled out a wrench before fighting him.

Now, the reason why the game’s battle system closely resembles that of Red Dead Redemption 2 is that Jason was visibly tired after continuously hitting the enemies with the wrench. This suggests that you should be more methodical with your moves because you might end up on the losing side if you run out of stamina.

Jason (and possibly Lucia) can also grab the various tools that are lying around. After defeating the NPCs, a small devil emoji pops up, which may signify Jason’s apparent notoriety.

Other things that were shown in the footage include:

  • A loadout system for vehicles.
  • A fuel system, which indicates that you cannot just infinitely drive around Leonida in GTA 6.
  • Some kind of “Honor System” that is similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • The ability to open/close the trunk of the vehicle.
  • The police system has seemingly been overhauled. Cops were able to spot Jason after he committed a crime, which suggests that these NPCs may familiarize themselves with your face, possibly preventing you from roaming around freely.

Maps and Locations

Cyberleek has dropped several leaked images from GTA 6 as well. Here is what we’ve gathered:

  • The map of Leonida is HUGE. The area is roughly 2.4-2.7x times the size of Los Santos and Blaine County in GTA 5 combined, as per community estimates.
  • The map shows the player’s current location, vehicle location, and the location of Jason and Lucia’s vehicle.
  • Leonida has tons of small islands, which you could probably visit.
  • The map shows a lot of small blue-, green-, and pink-colored dots. These colors may represent the protagonists, Jason and Lucia. The last colored dot probably indicates missions for both people.
  • The game features 700+ different places you can enter.
  • Rockstar has officially confirmed several major locations across Leonida, including Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga.

Now, you should take these leaks with a certain level of skepticism. The alleged leaked footage has already been taken down, though copyright enforcement should not be treated as official confirmation that the materials were authentic.

But what do you think? Are the leaks actually legit and were taken from the real game? Let us know in the comments!
